Executive Leadership Trouble Signs

Not acclimating well to the thin air at the top?

Most clients come to me because they are not as effective as they feel they should be in their leadership roles. Here are some signs of reaching an impasse:

  • Micromanaging the process below you and not stepping up to lead
  • Going over direct reports to get things done
  • Telling people more often than asking them
  • Sleeping poorly
  • Taking on new roles and responsibilities that should be delegated
  • Lacking a sense of purpose
  • Feeling like you need to keep pushing your team
  • Lacking a personal life outside of work
  • Procrastinating

Entrepreneurs often experience a loss of boundary between their interests and the interest of the business. As a result, their self-esteem gets tied to the business, so if the business is doing poorly, they think its because they’re not qualified to run it. My job as a coach is to remind clients that the business is there to serve them, not the other way around.

Whether you have a Harvard MBA or a high school diploma, you will not be prepared to think through the issues you’ll face as an entrepreneur. Schools don’t teach people how to deal with the constraints of starting and growing a business. Given time, you can probably work out at least some of these problems on your own. However, your time is extremely valuable, so why waste it? With the help of someone like me, who has learned many of those lessons the hard way, through hands-on experience, you can save a lot of costly time. Coaching keeps you on strategy, on pace, and in alignment with your business and personal goals.
