Have you had a friend die today?

June 12, 2011

FriendFriendship provides so much joy, light, and meaning in life. You may be at an event having an ordinary time when your friend walks through the threshold, and your eyes meet, triggering the mirror neurons to fire. The ordinary becomes extraordinary. You can’t explain it and you don’t need to. Meaning was given and not a word nor nod was even exchanged. Your heart filled.

Light turns to dark and your friend passes. A sense of dullness settles, and you begin to question your own mortality and the importance of everything. You might ask: Is there a god? Are we alone in the universe? What is my place in the world of things? Why was my friend taken and not me? Why now? When will be my time?

Apply the energy and importance of these questions to your everyday activities. You can’t get any moment back. You can’t spend any more moments with them, but you can spend each moment the way your friend would want you to. You can imagine them there with you. How would your friend want you to behave in this moment? What would your friend ask of you?
