Dear Readers,
CO2 is off and running with its “Values Assessment Exercise” test this month, engaging just a few hundred people to help us inspect and improve the application before our public beta launch. We are wound up tighter than a Swiss clock, ready to go cuckoo. The application's not faultless, it's not done, but testers will get the first chance to identify, define, and prioritize their core values—for free! If you would like to sign up for the beta list, simply click here.
If you requested a beta invitation and didn't make the first cut, not to worry. We'll be inviting testers on a continuing basis until the process is seamless. And if you haven't requested an invitation yet, it's not too late: Just Ask. Even if you don't get to test the program, you'll still be among the first to know when we launch.
Keep checking our home page because we will keep a running tally of the top four values entered by users. There, you’ll also find one of the best emerging directories for leaders, as well as a search tool that lists the most commonly used web sites for maps, travel, 411 directories, package tracking, flight tracking, etc. Our podcasting page will be completed soon, too, so that you will be able to listen online, download a podcast, or sign up for automatic updates to your iPod. These are just a few of the many new items being added to CO2 Partners’ site within the next month.
Best Regards,

Gary Cohen

How will questions motivate my coworkers? |

If: Leadership is not just about having coworkers do what you want, but having them want to do it.
Then: Motivation must be the heart of leadership.
Dr. Bob Nelson is one of the foremost experts on employee motivation and best-selling author of “1001 Ways to Reward Employees”— not surprising, coming from a longtime coworker of Dr. Ken Blanchard and doctoral student of management guru Peter Drucker. According to Dr. Nelson, these are the top six employee motivators:
- Support & Involvement
- Personal & Public Praise
- Autonomy & Authority
- Flexible Working Hours
- Learning & Development
- Manager Availability & Time
Amazingly, you can address five of these motivators just by asking questions!
Support and Involvement: When employees are asked a question like, “Where do you think the problem lies?” you engage their minds and involve them in the organization. By listening to their input and making use of their contributions, they then feel supported.
Personal & Public Praise: Asking employees, "How do you like to be praised and thanked when you do a good job?" takes the guesswork out of the recognition process. Naturally, employees will be more motivated to achieve positive results since they had a hand in choosing the means of recognition.
Autonomy & Authority: Once you and your coworker have discussed the parameters of a problem and set a direction for the initiative, ask, “How will you go about accomplishing this task?” Make it clear that you will be available as a resource, but the problem is theirs to solve. Your coworker will undoubtedly experience some anxiety, but with your trust, their increased autonomy and authority will lead to greater motivation and achievement.
Learning & Development: If your coworkers are remotely savvy with technology, they do not need to be spoon-fed directions. They know how to synthesize data into actionable knowledge. Short-cutting their discovery process by insisting they do things a certain way will often result in frustrated and disengaged workers. Ask questions, move out of the way, and watch them grow.
Manager Availability & Time: “Open door does not mean open mind,” Dr. Nelson reminds us. To be a leader means more than being available; it means being prepared to learn. If you consider yourself the storehouse of all company knowledge and decision-making acumen, your coworkers will not feel inspired to make innovative decisions. Make yourself available to their ideas. Make it clear that you do not have all the answers. Ask questions that reveal a true desire to learn and be exposed to new ideas.
If you want to motivate your coworkers, Just Ask. Question-based leadership will address five out of Dr. Nelson’s top six employee motivators. And, chances are, if you use this approach, you will also accomplish the sixth (flexible working hours)—because once you learn how much inspired employees can accomplish, you will be willing to explore alternative work arrangements!

"A General Theory of Love"
This is a great book if you are interested in the development of human intimacy—be it raising children, finding the love of your life, or connecting with people in the workplace. As a leader, you will learn valuable information about how to anticipate and handle emotional responses (both yours and team members’) when complicated situations arise.
The book reveals how we communicate and how we develop silent rhythms with other people. After reading it, you will be far more attuned to patterns of intimacy. You’ll also be more apt to recognize when intimacy is absent.
“A General Theory of Love” is a short read, but thick with content. It is not one of those books that after the first three chapters, you know all there is to know about the subject. Every chapter is fresh and builds on the previous ones, so you will really want to read to the end.
