Whose responsibility is it to coral the sacred cows and release the scapegoats?

June 3, 2011

Rabbi Hillel asked these questions almost two thousand years ago:

If not you, who?

If not now, when?

If not this much, how much?

Today, leaders would do well to ask the same questions. Leaders must be the ones who ask the questions and have the conversations everyone else is scared to have. They must challenge underlying assumptions and the sacred cows. They must come to the defense of scapegoats.

If you’re a leader, don’t wait for others to take these risks. Your coworkers likely take their cues from you. If you don’t question long-held assumptions or popular beliefs, they won’t, and the whole organization will suffer.
