Do you want to be lucky?

April 21, 2011

Lefty Gomez, who pitched for the Yankees in the 1930s, said, “It’s better to be lucky than good.” Rather than spend time disputing the value of being lucky vs. good, I recommend using your strengths make luck happen. Try these three steps:

1) Decide what you want to be lucky about;

2) Determine what actions you can take to increase your chances of success;

3) Repeatedly take these actions.

If you want CEOs to call you frequently for your services, find ways to spend more time with more CEOs. If you want to get married, spend more time on dating sites and ask more people out. If you want to raise more money, meet more investors.

The golfer Gary Player said, “The more I practice, the luckier I get.” There is a direct relationship between practice and luck. Yes, sometimes luck just happens, but usually it takes practice. What and how often are you practicing?
