Looking for a scapegoat?

April 11, 2011

Most people have a harder time sharing credit than they do assigning blame. When something goes wrong or worse than expected, we look for a scapegoat (often a scapegoat that we’ve used before). When something goes right or better than expected, we tend to look inward, not outward. What part did we play in getting it right?

When things go well, look outward. Look at the people you would prefer to blame and give them the credit they deserve. When you give them credit for their contributions, they’ll give you credit for yours.
